Why Adaptive Golf Is Worth a Try

Golf is a sport that can be adapted to many different abilities. With the right instruction and a few adjustments to stance, grip or swing, many people living with limb loss or other physical challenges are able to enjoy the game, whether for the first time or as a return to a sport they already love.

Time on the course offers more than recreation. Golf involves balance, weight shifting, core control and coordination, and it gets you outdoors and moving. It is also a social game, which makes it a great way to meet others in the adaptive sports community and build confidence in a supportive setting.

Golf is also a sport you can keep playing for years. It can be enjoyed at your own pace, whether that means a few holes with friends, time at the driving range or simply practicing your putting. Once you learn a setup that works for you, it can become a lasting part of an active lifestyle.

What to Expect at the Clinic

Each session runs for one hour and is led by a golf professional. Instruction is tailored to each participant, so you can focus on the fundamentals if you are new to the game or work on specific parts of your swing if you have played before. The atmosphere is relaxed and encouraging, and there is no pressure to perform.

Because pre-registration is required, be sure to sign up ahead of time and choose the session that works best for you.

How Golf Can Support Your Rehabilitation Goals

Many of the skills used in a golf swing are the same skills people work on during rehabilitation. Standing on uneven ground, shifting weight from one side to the other and rotating through the trunk all challenge balance and body control. For prosthesis users, golf can be a practical and enjoyable way to build confidence standing, turning and moving outdoors.

Adaptive sports also give therapy goals a real-world purpose. Working toward a smoother swing or a few holes with friends can be a powerful motivator, and the progress you make on the course can carry over into everyday activities at home and in the community.

If you are working with a therapist, it is a good idea to let them know you are interested in golf. They can help you focus on the strength, balance and mobility that will make your time on the course safer and more enjoyable.

Who Should Attend

This clinic is designed for amputees and others living with disabilities who are curious about golf or want to get back into the game. All skill levels are welcome, from people who have never held a club to experienced golfers adjusting to a new way of playing.

Tips to Get Ready for Clinic Day

A little preparation can help you get the most out of your session:

Dress for comfort. Wear clothing that lets you move freely and shoes with good grip for standing on grass.

Plan for the sun. Arizona afternoons can be bright, so bring sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water.

Bring what you normally use. If you use a prosthesis, brace or mobility device day to day, plan to use it during the clinic so your instruction fits how you move.

Arrive a little early. Give yourself time to check in and get settled before your session begins.
