Learning or Relearning the Game
For many people, a stroke, brain injury or amputation can make it feel like favorite activities are out of reach. Golf is a sport that can be adapted in many ways, and with the right guidance, players can find a swing and setup that work for their abilities.
Whether you played for years before your injury or have never set foot on a course, the First Swing Golf Clinic offers a supportive place to give it a try. Now in its 16th year, the clinic has a long history of helping people discover what is possible on the course.
You do not need any golf experience to take part. The instructors meet each participant where they are, whether that means learning how to hold a club for the first time or finding new ways to swing after an injury.
The Benefits of Getting Back on the Course
Golf combines balance, coordination, trunk rotation and controlled movement, all within an enjoyable outdoor setting. Practicing these skills in a fun, social environment can be a great complement to a rehabilitation program and a motivating way to stay active.
Just as important, adaptive sports can help rebuild confidence and create new connections. Spending an afternoon with others who share similar experiences can be both encouraging and inspiring.
Golf After Stroke, Brain Injury or Limb Loss
Every recovery journey is different, and the way each person approaches golf will be different too. After a stroke, some players learn to adjust their grip or swing to account for weakness on one side. People recovering from a brain injury may focus on rhythm, timing and coordination. For those living with limb loss, practicing stance and weight transfer with a prosthesis is often a key part of finding a comfortable, repeatable swing.
A clinic setting with experienced instructors is a great way to explore these adjustments safely. You can try different approaches, ask questions and leave with a better sense of how golf can fit into your life moving forward.
