Physical therapy or PT is a non-invasive treatment procedure provided by a trained and licensed physical therapist. The primary goal of physical therapy is to relieve pain and improve or restore movement and functions of the body impaired due to a disease, injury, disability, or other health complications. Physical therapy does not use medicines or surgery as treatment options.

Misconception: A doctor's referral is needed to see a physical therapist

Truth: An American Physical Therapy Association survey reveals that 70% of people think they cannot visit a physical therapist unless they have a prescription or referral from their doctor. The fact is that all 50 US states allow people direct access to a physical therapist. It aids in faster treatment and lowers medical costs. 

Misconception: Physical therapy hurts

Truth: Physical therapy aims to minimize pain and discomfort and restore strength, mobility, and overall function. Several people are scared or delay visiting a physical therapy clinic, believing it is painful. Physical therapists get the required training to work within each patient's pain threshold. It may be a little uncomfortable, but the physical therapist can adjust the treatment accordingly.

Misconception: Only people with severe injuries or acute pain require physical therapy

Truth: Physical therapists are movement and pain specialists. Physical therapy helps treat a range of conditions besides injuries and accidents. Misconception: Any medical industry professional can perform physical therapy

Some can even become certified specialists in specific fields, like neurology, oncology, pediatrics, cardiovascular and pulmonary. 

Misconception: Surgery is the only and more effective option

Truth: The type of physical therapy a patient needs depends on the severity of the health condition. Surgery is not the best option for all severe injuries and pain. Physical therapy is more beneficial and safer in treating symptoms in most circumstances. It can provide an effective alternative to surgery. A physical therapist can suggest which method will work best for a particular condition. 

Misconception: Physical therapists only use massage and exercise

Truth: Physical therapists are experts in body functions and movements. Massage and exercises are a part of physical therapy. Several other hands-on manual techniques and functional activities are also a part of the treatment plan. It is based on an individualized approach created after carefully analyzing the patient's movements.  

Misconception: Insurance does not cover physical therapy

Truth: Most health insurance policies cover some, if not all, physical therapy treatments. The method effectively reduces overall treatment cost as it does not require surgery, medication, and other scans.
